MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
B.Sc. or BSA University Degree in a related discipline (physiology - biochemistry - molecular biology) with minimum three years directly related lab experience required.
M.Sc in same is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Training in analytical and biochemical procedures in generation of
B. napus (canola) transgenic plants by CRISPR-Cas9 is required.
Previous experience in growing and maintaining canola plant materials in a controlled environment is required.
Previous experience in handling canola tissue culture and pod shattering plants, preferred.
Familiarity with pipelines for SNPs and structure variance.
An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
A reasonable degree of mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and good physical condition required.
Knowledge of computers including software packages for Word processing, spreadsheets, photoshop and presentations. Also, knowledge of photography required.
Ability to keep abreast of developments in the areas of expertise is required.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team required.
Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
Key responsibilities
Conduct chemical and physiological analysis to determine constituents.
Weigh and extracts samples.
Preparation of cell growth media, both solid and liquid, for maintenance and growth of research materials.
Transfer plant, cell, and callus material to fresh media. for the maintenance of tissues and subjecting materials to experimental conditions.
Transfer callus material to growth media for development of canola transgenic plants
Pollenate plant material for seed generation.
Extract DNA from plant and cell materials for genotyping to ensure maintenance of proper genetic lineage.
Extract RNA from plant and cell materials for preparation of cDNA and testing for expression of genes of interest using Real Time quantitative PCR techniques.
Facilitate location of cellular expression of genes using in situ hybridization techniques.
Coordinate plant and seedling materials for plant physiology course labs.
Train teaching assistants in the use of the instruments and any techniques.
Coordinate the requests for allocation of growth space for research projects conducted in the section.
Plant, cross, and maintain plant and cell material in the laboratory, greenhouse, growth rooms, or in experimental plots whether on the campus or at research locations outside Winnipeg to be used in tests and projects.
Assemble, calibrate, check for serviceability of the analytical equipment, and adjust to meet the particular requirements of the test.
Prepare reagents and analytical standards.
Extract nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), prepare clones in bacterial phage incorporating these nucleic acids, screening and characterizing the desired clones, and using these clones to identify the presence of the nucleic acid precursors of the original protein in samples.
Calculate and organize results.
Operate and assist others to operate computer and programs.
Plan and organize the use of laboratory equipment and facilities.
Decide analytical processes that are appropriate for the material under investigation and the type of data required.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laboratories to ensure efficiency in storing chemicals and supplies and personal safety.
Coordinate the ordering of chemicals and equipment for those persons working in the laboratory.
Ensure adequate supplies of chemicals, filters, and glassware are on hand.
Prepare figures, by drawing or computer methods, photograph figures and materials, and proofread articles for submission for publication.
Prepare materials and solutions for courses.
Participate as a support staff representative on committees and Departmental council when selected.
Member of department safety group.
Maintain laboratory records of chemicals, enzymes, reagents and kits required for procedures performed.
Maintain database of chemical and biological agent inventory's on the Environmental Health and Safety Office website program.
Assist in the application procedure for biological safety permits for the laboratory.
Adapt procedures for the extraction of plant material, preparing derivatives of extracts and standards by various techniques.
Keep a detailed record of experimental work and results.
Other duties as assigned.
