Salary: $17.22 - $20.10 per hour plus 6% vacation pay
Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.
Position Overview
This project aims to reduce cadmium (Cd) accumulation in flaxseed by leveraging zinc (Zn) treatments. The student will work in a team setting to grow plants, apply foliar- and soil-treatments of Zn to limit Cd uptake. They will also help with hyperspectral imaging of plant organs.
Duties
Prepare equipment and materials for research.
Employee will prepare soil, pot plants and nurture them.
Perform academic research, standard tests and experiments.
Employee will prepare Zn solutions of known concentration and apply to soil and plants. They will measure the amount of Cd in plant organs using standard methods. They will scan plants using hyperspectral imaging systems as pre-determined intervals.
Monitor and document research status and findings.
They will log the plant growth parameters as a function of Zn treatments.
Assist in the acquisition of research materials and supplies.
Employee will help source soil samples and order supplies.
Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
Enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Science.
Experience growing plants in a greenhouse setup. Any experience with scientific imaging will be an asset.
Previous experience with potting and nurturing plants in a lab setup is highly desired. Knowledge of hyperspectral imaging is an asset.
Condition(s) of Employment
Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
A valid MB driver’s license.
The period of work will be from June 11, 2026 - August 31, 2026 and the estimated total hours of work will be 10-180 hours.
