Position: Research Biostatistician - IT3 (AESES)

Qualifications

MINIMAL FORMAL

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

  • Master’s degree (MSc) in Biostatistics, Statistics, Epidemiology, or a closely related quantitative discipline is required.
  • PhD in Biostatistics or a related field is strongly preferred.

EXPIERENCE:

  • Experience applying biostatistical methods in a clinical research or health sciences setting is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with R and/or Python for statistical analysis and data management is required.
  • Experience with Power BI or equivalent data visualization platforms is required.
  • Familiarity with REDCap and clinical research databases is required.
  • Experience working with provincial health administrative data (e.g., MCHP, HIPC) is a strong asset.
  • Experience supporting randomized controlled trials or prospective cohort studies is an asset
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to communicate complex statistical concepts clearly to clinical investigators and non-statistician audiences is required.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with competing deadlines is required.
  • Ability to work independently and as a collaborative member of a multidisciplinary research team is required.
  • Commitment to rigorous, reproducible research practice is required.
  • Ability to mentor and support trainees in quantitative methods is an asset.
  • satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

Key responsibilities

RESEARCH DATA ANALYSIS

  • Provides biostatistical consultation to neurosurgery and spine program investigators at all stages of the research lifecycle, including study design, sample size calculation, analysis planning, and interpretation of results.
  • Performs statistical analyses for clinical trials, observational studies, and quality improvement projects, including survival analysis, mixed-effects models, regression modelling, and repeated measures designs.
  • Conducts data management, cleaning, and validation using REDCap, spine program registry databases, provincial health administrative data (MCHP/HIPC), and clinical trial datasets.
  • Develops and maintains reproducible analysis pipelines and workflows using R and Python.
  • Creates data visualizations and dashboards using Power BI to support reporting for clinical programs, granting agencies, and administrative stakeholders.
  • Collaborates in the preparation of grant applications, manuscript submissions, conference abstracts, and progress reports to funding agencies.
  • Assists in the design and maintenance of data collection instruments and electronic case report forms (eCRFs) in REDCap.
  • Ensures appropriate data governance, security, and privacy practices in accordance with PHIA and institutional requirements when working with identifiable or linked health data.
  • Provides statistical review and critique of internal research protocols and publications prior to submission.
  • Contributes to a positive research team environment and may mentor graduate students, residents, or junior research staff in quantitative methods as opportunities arise.
  • Participates in section research meetings and contributes to the ongoing development of research capacity within the spine program.
  • May be required to preform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
