Research Assistants are normally students in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.
Position Overview:
In this project the research assistant will contribute to and improve the capabilities of two photogrammetry systems. One of these systems is located at the University of Winnipeg, the other is located at the University of Manitoba. Together with our research collaborators in plant sciences the assistant will ensure that the systems work at high throughput and resolution, producing high-quality three-dimensional data suitable for plant phenotyping.
This also involves the development of algorithms to extract plant metrics.
Duties:
- Present results in team meetings to project holders
- Write progress reports
Qualifications:
- Academic Major in Applied Computer Science
- Completion of ACS-3909 Advanced Internet Programming
- Completion of ACS-3931 Principles of Operating Systems
- Completion of ACS-2112 Scientific Computing with Python Experience with single board computers, specifically Raspberry Pi and Raspberry Pi-compatible cameras
- Experience with Unix, SSH, SFTP
- Experience in creating web-based user interfaces
- The ideal candidate has experience in using embedded systems for imaging of objects, as well as experience in using programs for 3D-reconstruction using a Structure-from-Motion approach

- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from July 15, 2026 - December 15, 2026 and the estimated total hours of work will be 150 hours.
