QualificationsMINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related study area, including laboratory analysis techniques is required
- MSc Degree is preferred
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in molecular biology, microbiology, and/or health sciences is required
- Experience in operating anaerobic chambers and performing anaerobic culturing techniques, as well as the proper storage and transport of anaerobic samples is required
- Experience in next-generation sequencing (NGS) library preparation, including short-read (Illumina) and long-read (Oxford Nanopore) workflows and bioinformatic analyses is required
- Experience in chemical waste management, autoclaving, managing laboratory inventories is required
- Experience with natural product discovery workflows, including crude extract preparation, flash chromatography for compound separation and purification, and high-throughput bioactivity screening assays is required
- Experience in mammalian cell culture techniques is required
- Experience in isolation and purification of bacteriophages from different samples, plaque assays, and molecular analysis of phage genomes is required
- Experience in screening antimicrobial activities of different compounds against pathogens is required
- Experience maintaining laboratory equipment, ordering laboratory supplies and equipment is required
- Preference will be given to applicants with experience in lab administration, project management and animal handling
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Must be willing to work with cattle and swine
- Collection and processing of biological samples including feces, blood, milk, tissue, and mucosa samples from different organs including gut, airways and reproductive tracts is required
- Excellent organizational, budget management and interpersonal skills required
- Great writing and communication skills are required
- Ability to work independently and in a team is required
- Microbiology techniques including preparation of media, culturing bacteria under different conditions, working in biological safety cabinets and anaerobic chambers, screening antimicrobial activities of different compounds against pathogens, safe handling of pathogens, isolation, purification and cryopreservation of bacteria, isolation of genetic material (DNA/RNA), PCR, DNA and RNA quantification, cell culture (mammalian cell lines), measurement of inflammatory markers, next-generation sequencing (NGS) library preparation and bioinformatic analyses, natural product discovery workflows, crude extract preparation, flash chromatography, bioactivity screening assays, bacteriophages isolation and purification is required
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, safety standards and certificates to pass annual inspections
- Ensures regulations are in place, material transfer agreements and lab safety are up to date and implemented
- Maintains ordering, materials, chemicals, plasmids, antibodies, cell lines and animals into databases
- Assists PI with waste management, containment and storage
- Maintains a clean, sanitized and safe environment
- Maintains an inventory of chemicals, equipment, supplies and instruments
- Provides instructions on procedures, equipment and instruments to lab members
- Assist the PI with training students on various basic lab skills such as:
Using biological safety cabinets, pipetting, DNA and RNA isolation techniques, use of anaerobic chambers, centrifuges, grinders, PCR machines, and other relevant molecular biology techniques - Assist the PI in running animal trials including swine and beef and dairy cattle
- Assist the PI in supervising lab activities according to written protocols and procedures
