Position: Security Officer - SMHC - Repost (Selkirk)

Position Overview

Selkirk Mental Health Centre (SMHC) Security Services is built around a recovery model that encourages building relationships with patients, staff and the public. SMHC is a 252‑bed 24‑hour facility that provides specialized inpatient mental health and acquired brain injury treatment and rehabilitation services to residents of Manitoba and Nunavut.

Responsibilities
  • Provide safety and security for approximately 700 staff, 252 patients, families, and visitors at Selkirk Mental Health Centre.
  • Work on a rotational basis to support treatment services and assist patients in their recovery and reintegration into the community.
  • Perform pre‑landing inspections, activate emergency systems, and assist patient off‑loads.
  • Use two‑way radio and other security equipment (CCTV, radios, card access systems) to monitor premises.
  • Respond to and assist in crisis/emergency situations, maintaining a calm and respectful approach.
  • Report incidents and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Work in collaboration with coordinators of patient services and treatment teams.
  • Work weekend shifts and holidays as required.
Qualifications and Skills
  • High school education (Manitoba Standards) – required.
  • Completion of a Security Officer Training diploma or related experience in law enforcement or the military.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence.
  • Valid Manitoba Security Guard licence and/or future licence mandated by Manitoba Justice.
  • Certification through the Canadian General Standards Board and/or Manitoba Security Guard Training Standard.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search; clear Adult Abuse Registry Check.
  • Clear Child Abuse Registry Check.
  • Prior security experience preferred, especially in healthcare or dealing with difficult behaviours.
  • Excellent organizational, time‑management, oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations calmly, use discretion, good judgement, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of mental health issues – desired.
  • Physically able to walk considerable distance, restrain or evict unauthorised individuals as required.
Physical Requirements

Position requires a considerable amount of walking and the physical ability to restrain or evict unauthorized individuals. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
