Position Overview
Selkirk Mental Health Centre (SMHC) Security Services operates with a recovery model that emphasizes building relationships with patients, staff, and the public. SMHC is a 252‑bed, 24‑hour facility providing specialised inpatient mental health and acquired brain injury treatment and rehabilitation services to residents of Manitoba and Nunavut whose challenging needs cannot be met elsewhere in the provincial health‑care system.

SMHC has five specialised patient programmes:
Acute, Geriatric, Rehabilitation, Forensic, and Acquired Brain Injury, delivered across several buildings on campus and in three off‑site community group homes in Selkirk. The facility employs more than 700 staff members. Security officers must effectively manage a range of situations and interact with employees, patients, the public, and management, including weekend and holiday shifts.

Main Function
Provide safety and security for approximately 700 staff, 252 patients, families, and visitors at Selkirk Mental Health Centre. Duties are carried out on a rotational basis to support the treatment services and assist patients in their recovery and re‑integration into the community. Security officers demonstrate commitment to the SMHC vision, values, goals, and objectives, maintaining a strong focus on patient safety.

The incumbent reports to the Manager of Security Services and the Security Shift Supervisor, working collaboratively with Coordinators of Patient Services and treatment teams.

Required Experience

Prior security experience preferred.

Experience providing security services dealing with difficult behaviours.

Experience with security equipment such as CCTV, radios, card access systems.

Experience handling crisis or emergency situations.

Experience working in a healthcare environment (desired).

Education

Complete high school education (Manitoba Standards) required.

Diploma from a recognised facility for Security Officer Training or, alternatively, a combination of previous law enforcement or military experience.

Certification/Licence/Registration

Valid Class 5 driver’s licence.

Valid Manitoba Security Guard licence and/or any future licence mandated by Manitoba Justice.

Certification through the Canadian General Standards Board and/or Manitoba Security Guard Training Standard.

Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.

Clear Adult Abuse Registry Check.

Qualifications & Skills

Excellent organisational and time‑management skills.

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Excellent interpersonal and team‑building skills.

Ability to manage difficult and stressful situations calmly and respectfully.

Knowledge of mental health issues (desired).

Ability to perform activities such as pre‑landing inspections, activation of emergency systems, and assisting patient off‑loads.

Proficiency in using a two‑way radio.

Strong interpersonal communication skills.

Confidentiality and discretion.

Judgement and good decision‑making.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Mature, professional manner.

Clear communication capabilities.

Physical Requirements

Requires a considerable amount of walking and the physical ability to restrain or evict unauthorised individuals.

Physically able to perform all duties of the position.

Other Conditions
Position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.

Note that an employee is not permitted to hold two or more positions in Shared Health that combine to equal more than 1.0 FTE.
