overview:

reporting to the support work program supervisor, the sacred care support worker is responsible for working alongside families and children to guide and assist them in achieving their goals. Shawenim abinoojii's inc. Mission and values is to support families, and to provide first nations cultural and spiritual connections to the children and youth in our care. This position will work in winnipeg, the surrounding areas and/or the eight (8) southeast first nations northern communities we serve.

responsibilities:
  • provide mentoring and guidance to individuals and families, offering emotional support and practical advice as needed.
  • provide nurturing care and guidance to youth who may have complex behavioral or emotional needs.
  • strong knowledge of issues affecting young people and communities such as but not limited to addictions, gang affiliations, exploitation and mental health issues.
  • applying a trauma-informed, culturally safe approach to care, meeting young people where they are at.
  • respond calmly and respectfully to crises and behavioral escalations with a focus on relationship-based de-escalation, including supporting youth to access appropriate and immediate resources.
  • implement strategies and interventions to promote positive communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • collaborate with community resources focused on wellness services and support, which may include cultural teachings, mental health, addictions supports and other services.
  • provide in-home support services, including assistance with daily living activities, household management which can include light household keeping, meal preparation, and transportation.
  • advocate for the rights and well-being of individuals and families, ensuring they have access to resources and services that meet their needs.
  • document interactions, observations, and interventions accurately, and maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • participate in training and professional development activities to stay current with best practices and emerging trends in the field of support services.
  • facilitate recreational opportunities for young people.
  • maintain accurate timesheets and mileage submissions.
  • support youth in the development of their daily living skills, based on their needs and goals.
  • fostering a safe and supportive environment that empowers youth to explore and respond to their complex emotional and psychological requirements.
  • utilize a relationship-based approach to deescalating and responding to emergencies as they arise.
  • maintain timely and effective communication with the holistic circle of care to support the care of youth.
  • must be able to stay awake and focused for the full duration of all shifts.

qualifications:
  • must have a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle with a satisfactory driver abstract, required.
  • asist, nvci, first aid cpr, and other related trainings considered an asset.
  • must have grade 12 education and experience in human services field.
  • knowledge in the area of addictions and trauma and the impact it has on families.
  • knowledge of the child and family services (cfs) sector and legislation.
  • previous experience working with individuals and families in a supportive capacity, preferably in a social services or community-based setting.
  • experience working with children and youth who have complex emotional and psychological requirements.
  • excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • ability to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
