Basketball Manitoba is the Provincial Sport Organization for basketball in the province of Manitoba. Managed by a Board of 10 Directors elected by its members, the Board is tasked with ensuring that all Manitobans have access to the programs run by the association and that the game of basketball is enjoyed by as many people as possible!

Description of DutiesBasketball Manitoba and the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association are seeking passionate and dedicated volunteers to take on the role of head coach or assistant coach in our community basketball programs. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of young athletes while helping grow the game at the grassroots level.
As a coach, you will play a vital role in teaching basketball skills and concepts at team practices and games, with support from the area Convenor.
You will be responsible for fostering a positive and inclusive team environment, communicating with players and parents, and helping athletes develop not just as basketball players, but also as individuals.
Volunteering as a youth basketball coach is a chance to give back to the sport, inspire the next generation, and be a mentor to young athletes. Whether you are a former player, a basketball enthusiast, or someone looking to gain coaching experience, this role provides valuable leadership and teamwork skills that extend beyond the court.
No prior coaching experience is required—training and resources are available to help you succeed. Join us in making a difference in your community through basketball!
Skills Required- Experience as a player or coach in the sport of basketball or involvement as a coach in another sport is an asset but not required.
- The most important qualities are a positive attitude, strong communication skills, and a willingness to support and mentor young athletes.
- Coach education opportunities are provided and available to all coaches in the program, ensuring you have the knowledge and resources needed to succeed in your role.
- A commitment to fostering a fun, inclusive, and supportive environment for all players is essential.
- Coaches should be reliable, organized, and willing to collaborate with team members, parents, and program staff to create the best possible experience for young athletes.
- Leadership & Team Management - As a coach, you will learn how to motivate, mentor, and guide young athletes. These leadership skills are crucial in fields such as management, education, and community development.
- Public Speaking & Communication - Coaches regularly speak in front of teams, parents, and program staff, helping to improve confidence in public speaking and effective communication—valuable in careers like teaching, sales, and business administration.
- Teaching & Mentorship - Coaching involves instructing and guiding players of different skill levels, reinforcing teaching techniques applicable to careers in education, training, and human resources.
- Problem‑Solving & Decision‑Making - Managing game situations, handling conflicts, and making strategic adjustments are all part of coaching, strengthening decision‑making skills useful in leadership roles and crisis management.
- Time Management & Organization - Coordinating practices, planning game strategies, and balancing team responsibilities help develop strong organizational skills applicable to any professional setting.
