Job Description

The Tool and Die Maker is responsible for maintaining, rebuilding, modifying, and fabricating replacement parts for assigned tools according to Biomerics tooling, quality, and time standards. This position may also assist with troubleshooting tools and supporting the pressroom as needed. The role reports to the Tool Maintenance Supervisor, who oversees task delegation, workflow, and hours worked.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain regular, on-site, and reliable attendance.
  • Inspect parts, strips, components, and tools.
  • Perform unscheduled maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with management on continuous process improvement.
  • Read and interpret blueprints or work from verbal/written instructions or physical samples.
  • Determine specifications and inspect work using precision measuring and gauging tools before, during, and after machining.
  • Perform hand operations to produce jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies using trade-specific hand tools.
  • Fit and assemble jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies.
  • Set up and test dies to ensure products meet specifications; diagnose and correct die issues.
  • Update all shop prints with redline changes.
  • Record work performed and hours expended on tool maintenance cards; sign off on completed work.
  • Maintain daily timesheets for tool maintenance cost analysis.
  • Clean and maintain assigned equipment and work area.
  • Collaborate with product designers by providing input on manufacturing capabilities for new products.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the manager.
  • Carry out responsibilities beneficial to company operations as directed by Biomerics management.
Requirements

  • Completion of a formal apprenticeship or an in-company five-year training program approved by management.
  • Journey-level machinists may qualify for the Tool and Die rate after one year of additional tool and die training, as approved by management.
  • High degree of precision and manual dexterity required.
  • Ability to operate a dry manual surface grinder and grind carbide and tool steel to tolerances as tight as ±.0001 inches.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience operating a surface grinder.
  • Experience in a die and mold shop is required.
