Position Overview
The Educational Sign Language Interpreter is a trained professional who facilitates communication between deaf or hard‑of‑hearing students and others within an educational setting. American Sign Language (ASL) is used to interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa, ensuring students have accommodations for classroom instruction, activities, and learning discussions.
Minimum Requirements- Proficiency in American Sign Language
- Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in interpreting, deaf studies, or related field (preferred)
- State Board of Education Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate, as applicable
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certificate, as applicable per state regulation or client requirement
- Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification, as applicable per state regulation or client requirement
- Compliance with all relevant professional standards of practice
- Current CPR certification, if applicable
- TB questionnaire, PPD or chest x‑ray, if applicable
- Current health certificate, per contract or state regulation
- Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age
