Responsibilities- Conduct project related activities including mechanical design, prototype manufacturing, and testing of medical devices, experimental apparatus, and instruments for the Translational Engineering and Design Core as part of the Biomedical Engineering Department and IRCAD North America incubator.
- Proactively manage parallel projects; hands-on manufacturing and testing; oral and written reporting; professional communication with clients; and creative problem-solving to foster positive relationships with basic science and clinical clients to provide quality service.
- Interface with core lab clients to design, develop, construct, and test specialized instruments, equipment, and tools to assist researchers and clinicians in clinical and research activities.
- Utilize CAD, CAM, FEA, segmentation, production, mechanical testing, and/or coding software to complete design, research, and fabrication projects addressing client needs.
- Provide project management, schedule equipment maintenance, and interface with purchasing systems to maintain lab and project supplies; manage client experience and project timelines from inception through delivery with follow-up support as needed.
- Present core services and offerings to internal and external research and clinician audiences; travel to conferences and symposiums as required.
- Maintain a catalog of services and capabilities and a project portfolio; aid in supporting junior engineers and interns in core related work; assist in development of new procedures and techniques related to design and fabrication of mechanical and electrical medical device prototypes and experimental apparatus.
- Participate in skill training, represent the core at conferences with opportunities to present original or collaborative work, and contribute to growing the external customer base.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline with two to five years of design and manufacturing experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in an engineering field/industry. Additional proficiency in computer science and/or electrical engineering is helpful.
