Job OverviewSenior‑level Industrial Hygiene Specialist responsible for assessing health hazards in academic and research environments, ensuring regulatory compliance, and providing guidance to staff and students.
Key Responsibilities- Perform comprehensive safety and industrial hygiene assessments to identify potential health hazards, including chemical, noise, biological, radiological, and other physical exposures.
- Develop, implement, and manage industrial hygiene programs, policies, and procedures in line with applicable regulations and industry best practices.
- Design sampling strategies, conduct exposure sampling, and interpret data to evaluate personnel exposures and engineering controls.
- Lead or participate in incident investigations related to occupational illnesses or exposures, recommending corrective actions and engineering or administrative controls.
- Analyze monitoring data and prepare detailed reports documenting findings and recommendations.
- Provide support and guidance for medical surveillance and occupational health programs.
- Conduct indoor air quality, ADA, and ergonomic assessments in research and academic settings.
- Interact with regulatory agencies during compliance inspections for research facilities.
- Serve as the technical resource and subject‑matter expert for Environmental, Health & Safety.
- Participate in the hazardous‑materials spill response team, including weekend and after‑hours response.
- Assist with the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Chemical Safety Committee, and other related committees.
- Stay current on new regulations and industry trends, recommending program updates as needed.
- Develop and administer training or educational resources for research and academic teammates.
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical, Biological, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of related experience.
- Knowledge of regulatory code requirements including NIH, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, EPA, and OSHA.
- Strong industrial hygiene principles and exposure‑prevention techniques.
- Capacity to analyze programs, identify improvements, and prioritize short‑ and long‑term planning.
- Detail‑oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple tasks within deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with researchers, staff, students, administrators, and regulators.
- Competence with PC, office productivity, presentation, and database applications.
- Prepared to work in laboratories, healthcare environments, animal facilities, and hazardous‑waste facilities with potential exposure to radiation, chemicals, or biological agents.
- Travel required; exposure to weather and road conditions.
- Operate equipment necessary for the job.
- Lift and carry heavy materials, climb/descend ladders, and enter confined spaces.
- Serve on the hazardous‑materials spill response team, including wearing respiratory protection.
- Work in environments that may present chemical, mechanical, and atmospheric hazards.
- Master’s degree.
- Certifications:
Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP).
- Base compensation $43.30‑$64.95 per hour, based on qualifications.
