General Statement of Duties
The Medical Laboratory Assistant, working under the oversight of the Medical Laboratory Manager and Medical Laboratory Supervisor, is responsible for performing a variety of routine and standardized medical laboratory tests using highly technical laboratory equipment. The tests aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients served by the Forsyth County Department of Public Health. This position performs and records quality controls for all diagnostic testing as well as for all laboratory equipment and may provide phlebotomy services, including venipuncture and finger sticks, to clients served by the Department of Public Health.
WorkSchedule
Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; rotating Thursday 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Schedule adjusted to maintain a 40‑hour week.

- High school diploma or GED and demonstrated ability to perform required tasks gained through one year of laboratory or closely related experience.
- A higher education level may be considered a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.
- Perform venipuncture or capillary specimen collection for all FCDPH clinics.
- Ensure all necessary equipment and supplies for phlebotomy services are stocked and organized.
- Process specimens, ensuring all are labeled correctly and have the correct requisition in the EMR.
- Regularly communicate with clinic and laboratory staff on issues involving the phlebotomy area.
- Document all venipunctures on the Time of Draw log.
- Wash and sterilize all glassware used in laboratory testing.
- Prepare specimens, media, and reagents for lab tests and sample bottle for water testing.
- Perform quality control of media prepared in the lab.
- Perform routine GC tests from plate cultures.
- Perform related work as required.
