Overview

Forsyth County's General Services Department has an opening for an Automotive Technician. The Automotive Technician is a hands‑on tech that works on a wide variety of vehicles, including fleet, emergency, and specialty vehicles. Technicians perform everything ranging from PM’s and tire changes to engine replacements and vehicle upfits.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with on‑call work as needed.

Uniforms, safety shoes, and tool stipends are offered to qualified employees.

Skills & Abilities
  • Estimate time and materials needed to complete a job.
  • Diagnose causes of defective operation and perform major and minor overhauls on a variety of equipment.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Follow written direction in specialized vehicle manuals.
  • Knowledge of the uses of a variety of repair tools and special testing equipment.
  • Knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Lifting 50–100 lbs occasionally, 25–50 lbs frequently, or 10–20 lbs constantly.
Experience
  • Completion of a one‑year technical school program in automotive repair and at least two years of responsible automotive repair work on a variety of vehicles; or graduation from high school or GED and at least three years of relevant experience.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must have NC Vehicle Inspection License (or the ability to acquire within 60 days of employment).
  • A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.
  • Current ASE certifications preferred.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Inspect, service, and repair a variety of vehicles; may specialize in Sheriff's vehicles as well as other vehicles.
  • Inspect and diagnose the operation of gasoline and diesel automotive equipment to determine repair needs.
  • Conduct complete tune‑ups, install plugs, condensers, coils, rotors, distributor caps, wiring, and set proper timing.
  • Overhaul brakes by honing wheels and master cylinders, turning drums, installing new linings, and bleeding the system.
  • Repair or install doors, glass, locks, shock absorbers, sirens, tires, and other equipment.
  • Disassemble engines and perform general engine overhaul work.
  • Drive a wrecker to respond to disabled or wrecked county vehicles.
  • Perform N.C. vehicle safety inspections.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles as scheduled.
  • Overhaul transmissions and differentials.
  • Overhaul cooling and fuel systems and make simple body repairs.
  • Perform related work as required.
Licensure Maintenance

Maintain a driver's license in good standing, without lapse or loss of privilege to drive in compliance with North Carolina law, and comply with applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers if required to perform the duties assigned to the position.
