FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt
SummaryThe Screwman is a key member of the asphalt paving crew responsible for adjusting, controlling, and maintaining the screed on the asphalt paver. This role ensures proper depth, grade, and quality of the asphalt mat during paving operations. The Screwman works closely with the operator and ground crew to produce a smooth, even, high‑quality surface.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Operate and adjust the screed to maintain proper mat thickness, crown, and slope.
- Monitor the head of material and ensure consistent flow for optimal compaction.
- Coordinate with the paver operator and foreman to maintain correct speed and alignment.
- Perform routine checks and minor maintenance on the screed and related equipment.
- Assist with handwork, raking, and shoveling when needed.
- Ensure all work meets project specifications and quality standards.
- Maintain a safe work environment and follow all safety policies and procedures.
- Communicate effectively with the crew to ensure smooth, efficient paving operations.

- Previous experience in asphalt and paving operations required. 2–3 years of experience as a screwman.
- Strong understanding of screed controls, automation systems, grade/slope adjustments.
- Ability to read grades and follow instructions.
- Physically capable of standing, bending, lifting, and working in outdoor conditions.
- Reliable, safety‑focused, and able to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Ability to work extended hours, including overtime and weekends when required.
- Frequent standing, kneeling, bending, and lifting.
- Repetitive use of hand tools such as rakes and shovels.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull 50–75 lbs. regularly.
- Working long hours outdoors includes heat, sun, rain, and cold.
- Navigating uneven or soft ground surfaces.
- Outdoor construction environment with exposure to extreme heat, sun, rain, and cold.
- High noise levels from equipment, trucks, and machinery.
- Exposure to dust, fumes, odors, and hot materials.
- Work involves proximity to active traffic and heavy equipment.
- PPE required at all times.
