Job Duties
  • Survey commercial citrus properties for expressed symptoms of citrus diseases; travel to remote survey areas, walk or ride all‑terrain vehicles, identify diseased plants, collect and submit samples per program procedures.
  • Record and report survey data using established protocols.
  • Operate as a team player in daily crew and field station functions; submit timely and accurate reports, input records into Mobile Inspection apps, maintain records, complete vehicle reports, timesheets, leave requests, and daily vehicle/ATV cleaning.
  • Perform all activities for the Giant African Land Snail (GALS) eradication program: field detection, collection, preparation, and submission of insects, arthropods, diseases, soil samples; send samples to the appropriate technical bureau for confirmation.
  • Inspect fruit movement in commercial groves and processing plants for compliance with CHRP regulations; prepare and maintain regulatory event records, attend meetings and training sessions as required; communicate with growers and grower groups concerning CHRP regulations; validate status of Grove Blocks/Multi‑Blocks; collect GPS readings for suspect plants and assist in sample collections.
  • Respond to new and existing detections statewide and routine high‑risk detections requiring extensive travel, often two weeks or more away from headquarters; respond to emergency programs requiring prolonged absences and unusual hours.
  • Interact with coworkers, management, and the public in a courteous manner; respond to consumer complaints or refer them to the proper agency.
  • Attend meetings, workshops, public outreach events, and stay current on department activities.
  • Assist with inspections of plant material and high‑risk commodities to exclude pests, including but not limited to fruit fly detection and import inspections.
  • Maintain passing grade on all fruit fly related training material.
  • Other related duties as directed by management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of plant cultivation.
  • Knowledge of report writing, maps, portable GPS receivers, filing principles and procedures.
  • Skill in completing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Skill in performing basic math, report writing, and form completion.
  • Ability to interact with the public and team members professionally and courteously.
  • Ability to recognize citrus varieties and known host plants of citrus diseases.
  • Ability to recognize Giant African Land Snail and other snails or slugs of economic importance.
