Position: Clerk of Works (PMCM Build)

Job Description

Clerk of Works – Construction Quality Management (CQM) Team supporting the Department for Education’s school rebuilding projects. The role is based at the WSP Cambridge office and at the client’s project location in Wisbech, with hands‑on collaboration with client teams.

Duties
  • Review design, drawings, specifications, employer's requirements, contractor's proposals and other technical and contract documents as required.
  • Advise on compliance with Building Regulations, DfE specifications, and third‑party accreditation requirements.
  • Inspect construction work at least three times per week from start of site until practical completion.
  • Provide weekly written reports on construction quality following site inspections.
  • Attend design update meetings from contract award.
  • Attend monthly site meetings and other meetings required for contract management.
  • Conduct pre‑handover and handover quality inspections, preparing and issuing appropriate schedules and reports.
  • Conduct end of defects liability period inspections, preparing and issuing appropriate schedules and reports.
  • Undertake factory visits for off‑site construction projects.

The role is part of WSP’s wider Project and Commercial Management team. Opportunities exist to work on projects across the UK, with access to training and development resources in a supportive environment.

What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate Technical knowledge & experience
  • Relevant Construction Professional Status.
  • Technical knowledge of the construction industry.
  • Relevant practical site experience.
CDM Regulations Understanding
  • Understanding of the purpose and principles of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
  • Understanding of the CDM “Principle of Prevention”.
Soft Skills
  • Effective oral and written communication and engagement skills.
  • Confidence to professionally challenge and influence duty holders to ensure compliance.
Additional Skills
  • Demonstrated capability and experience in Construction Quality Management.
  • Relevant higher education qualification.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience inspecting public sector or equivalent buildings.
  • Multi‑disciplinary design coordination experience and site monitoring and recording.
Specific Requirements For

The Role
  • Chartered member of a relevant construction institution (e.g., ICE, IStructE, ARB, CIBSE, IMechE, CIOB).
  • Experience with modern methods of construction, including factory and on‑site inspections.
  • Familiarity with the latest Clerk of Works & Site Inspector Handbook.
  • Knowledge of the UK BIM Framework.
  • Knowledge of the Building Safety Act, CDM regulations and other health and safety legislation.
  • Familiarity with HSG
    168 Fire Safety in Construction.
  • Knowledge of DfE Soft Landings and its implementation.
