YMCA Camp Icaghowan in Amery, WI, is seeking an organized, enthusiastic Summer Camp Horse Program Manager to lead our horse wrangler team in Summer 2026! The pay rate for this position starts at $19.00 hourly, seasonal role, working 36-40 hours/week between May 17th to September 4th, 2026. Hours will generally fall between 8am – 5pm Sundays to Thursdays, with certain weekend shifts as-needed.
The Summer Camp Horse Program Manager will oversee the curriculum and management of Icaghowan’s tiered horse camp programming for participants ages 8-14. They will provide and uphold quality care for the horses and campers, in partnership with the camp group counselors. They are the main point of contact for the vet and feed co-op teams, and ensure any horse-related needs are met.
They will ensure the wrangler team are thoughtfully scheduled, well trained, and ready to provide quality programming.
The Camp Horse Program Manager is responsible for all aspects of the horse program, including staff supervision, horse care, parent communication, and implementing camps and lessons. The incumbent will support team in delivering high quality horse educational and recreational experiences for participants with a focus on the YMCA core values of caring, equity, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Essential Functions- Manage camp’s horse program while meeting the expectations outlined in the YMCA of the North’s Horse Program SOP.
- Participate in Y of the North horse committee meetings and trainings and provide updates on horse programs.
- Coordinate horseback riding lessons while prioritizing high-quality customer service and high-quality lessons.
- Work with groups to book horseback riding events. Provide high quality customer service and ensure all groups are booked appropriately.
- Partner with Camp Program Executive to ensure program meets budget expectations.
- Partner with Office Manager/Program Director to create camp wrangler work schedules while working within budgeted ratios.
- Promote programs to meet horse camp and riding lesson enrollment goals.
- Effectively and efficiently communicate with customers, vendors, staff, and volunteers.
- Provide training to Camp Wranglers and Camp Counselors. Ensure all team members working with horses have demonstrated the appropriate competencies. Ensure the appropriate staff documentation is completed and organized for each Camp Wrangler.
- Coach and mentor team members responsible for facilitating horse experiences and caring for horses.l
- Create staff work schedules that meet budget expectations.
- Ensure the health and well-being of all horses, including feeding, grooming, and medical care.
- Provide equine first aid and/or emergency care. Contact vet as needed.
- Maintain effective working relationships with farrier and vet.
- Always ensure the safety of all participants while meeting their individual needs.
- Be alert to program safety factors and potential hazards; prevent accidents and minimize or eliminate hazardous situations; report any problems or hazards to the Property Manager or Program Director.
- Appropriately respond to and report injuries, near misses and other incidents.
- Know, adhere to, and enforce all YMCA rules, policies, and emergency procedures.
This position reports to the Program Director who reports to the Senior Program Director or Executive Director. The incumbent will work collaboratively with the Assistant Camp Director and Camp Property Manager. The incumbent interacts regularly with camp staff, campers, volunteers, and families. This position involves interaction with individuals and communities of diverse backgrounds.
QualificationsRequired:
- Must be 18 years of age (Age 21+ is preferred)
- Minimum of three (5) years of experience working in a leadership role.
- Experience caring for horses, including equine first aid and emergency care.
- Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper horseback riding techniques.
- Experience facilitating horseback riding lessons and/or trail rides.l
- Adult and Pediatric First Aid & CPR/AED provided by YMCA or other certified organization.
- Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities with all age levels.
