Consumer Safety Inspector – USDA-FSIS

Open position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food Safety and Inspection Service, serving the Des Moines District. 4 days ago, 25 applicants will be considered first.

Summary

$5,000 Sign on Bonus, Creditable Service for Annual Leave Accrual, Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, and Referral Bonus Awards are available. Shifts and species will vary based on assignment. Duties

Perform the duties of a Consumer Safety Inspector, including inspection of food products, sampling, laboratory testing, and monitoring for safety and compliance with federal statutes. Work may involve identifying abnormalities in products or production environments, recommending corrective actions, documenting findings in written reports, and communicating results to internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education as defined below. Specialized experience refers to knowledge of properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities or other human‑consumptions. Experience may have been acquired in roles such as consumer safety inspector, food inspector, public health inspector, quality inspection specialist, or similar positions dealing with sampling, quality control, and sanitation in a food manufacturing or production environment.

Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate at least 52 weeks of qualified experience for GS‑05, and additional years of independent experience for higher grades. Experience should include:

  • Collecting samples and performing field tests and examinations (e.g., identifying abnormalities, recommending corrective actions).
  • Developing written reports and/or reporting findings orally.
  • Maintaining effective personal contacts with a variety of individuals regarding food safety standards.
  • Working with the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, basics of SSOP/HACCP principles, performing basic mathematics and elementary statistical concepts for testing and sampling procedures.
  • Demonstrating independence and the ability to recommend refusal of exports or provide temporary coverage at locations outside the official duty station, as required at higher grades.

Volunteer experience through National Service programs such as Peace Corps or Ameri Corps is creditable. All qualifying experience, including volunteer experience, will be recognized.
