Consumer Safety Inspector

Salary and incentives: $5,000 Sign on Bonus, Creditable Service for Annual Leave Accrual, Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, Accelerated Promotion Program, and Referral Bonus. Shifts and species will vary based on assignment. Employees may be detailed to any shift at any plant in the Des Moines District.

• Perform routine, standard assignments in the inspection of meat, poultry, and egg products.
• Collect samples and conduct field tests and examinations, identifying abnormalities and recommending corrective actions.
• Develop written reports and present findings orally to internal and external contacts.
• Maintain compliance with federal regulations, including the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, and SSOP and HACCP principles.
• Support hazardous working environments and assist in recommending refusal of exports or providing coverage at other locations.

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education.

Specialized experience: 52 weeks of experience acquiring knowledge of regulated food commodities or other ingestible substances (GS‑05). Applicants should provide resume examples of sample collection, field testing, reporting, and communication.

GS‑07: At least one year of specialized experience, performing standard duties independently.

GS‑08: At least one year of specialized experience (GS‑07 equivalent). Demonstrate experience with Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts; SSOP and HACCP principles; basic mathematics and statistics for testing and sampling; conclusions drawing.

GS‑09: At least one year of specialized experience (GS‑08 equivalent). Experience working independently at a higher level, recommending export refusals, and providing temporary coverage at other locations.

Volunteer experience may be credited. Additional qualifications include OPM's Qualifications Standards, Consumer Safety Inspector Series, GS‑1862. Work is performed in hazardous environments.
