Field Research Technician - Clemson University

Job title: Field Research Assistant

Location: Texas (across multiple field sites in and around the Houston area; travel required)

Time period: Full-time position - 6 months (January 2026 – June 2026)

Job Description: The purpose of the research is to collect data and assess species distribution, species abundance, conservation status, life history traits and characterize critical habitats of three crayfish species endemic to Texas. The Research Assistant will work closely with a Masters of Science (MS) student to manage data and equipment, conduct field work, and complete other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in field sampling by digging crayfish burrows, seining and dip netting to collect aquatic organisms and use of additional sampling methods appropriate for crayfish habits
  • Map and navigate to historical and contemporary sites
  • Identify and record crayfish species in the field and lab, using s
  • Record habitat data including (hydrology, substrate and vegetation types, and other ecological parameters
  • Operate field equipment (e.g., water quality meter)
  • Safely transport and preserve specimens
  • Assist with managing GIS database and recording information
  • Adhere to safety and ethical guidelines for conducting live animal research
  • Sample in physically demanding areas (roadside ditches, streams, and fields within rural and residential areas, and state and federal lands)
  • Handle live species in the field

Requirements:

  • Experience conducting ecological fieldwork
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time in variable weather conditions
  • Willingness to travel with irregular hours, including early mornings and late evenings.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment (no more than 50 lbs) and hike short distances
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred:

  • Experience working with crayfishes (preferably burrowing crayfishes)
  • Experience with GIS mapping software

Work Schedule:

  • Fieldwork requires 10–12-hour days, 4-6 days per week, depending on the site conditions and project needs. Hours may vary depending on weather conditions and site availability.
