Position: Transport Officer (Casual)
Location: Chilton

Responsibilities

  • Maintain security of the jail to ensure safety and well‑being of inmates and staff in accordance with laws, policies and procedures.
  • Keep jail area clean and orderly.
  • Take custody of, book, and release inmates by performing fingerprints, photographs, searches, and inventories of personal belongings.
  • Assign and escort inmates to cells or similar area; issue uniforms, bedding, personal products, and other supplies; ensure proper placement of inmates in facility; release inmates upon posting of bail, signing of signature bond, direction of an appropriate authority, or for work release purposes.
  • Maintain jail security; conduct periodic rounds, security inspections, and searches of inmates and inmate quarters for contraband and unauthorized/dangerous materials; maintain surveillance of all inmates and jail activities through visual and audible devices.
  • Enforce regulations and discipline policies related to the security and operation of the facility.
  • Conduct inmate counts and ensure inmates do not escape.
  • Establish and maintain continuing relationships with inmates watching for illegal activities or violations of jail regulations, unusual or suspicious behaviors, and signs of mental and physical illness.
  • Provide medical, mental or other attention necessary for inmates' welfare according to established policies and procedures; dispense inmate medication and keep accurate records of disbursements.
  • Assist with operation of the food service program as needed and supervise all inmate workers assigned to the kitchen; supervise cleaning, laundry, and daily hygiene according to established schedules and procedures.
  • Respond to emergency situations according to departmental policies and procedures; may employ force to quell disturbances and maintain discipline.
  • Take precautionary steps to prevent transmission of communicable diseases.
  • Maintain inmate compliance with laws, rules and policies by performing checks in inmates, verifying employment, conducting job site and home visits, managing transfers, conducting random drug and alcohol testing, and depositing funds; transport prisoners to and from facilities, courts, and medical/mental treatment facilities.
  • Monitor and operate all equipment and alarms in the jail control center; assist or relieve radio operators as required; administer Intoxilyzer test; direct visitors; coordinate visits with family, friends, clergy, attorneys, and probation and parole personnel; conduct jail tours.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports; collect and issue receipts for bail bonds and fine payments; conduct vehicle examinations required by issuance of warning tickets; obtain initial information on accident reports; respond to inquiries and complaints from the public; attend training and in‑service as required.
Qualifications
  • Good knowledge of Wisconsin Statutes and rules and regulations relating to the care and commitment of prisoners and operation of the department; ability to learn procedures governing proper maintenance and operation of the facility.
  • Constant working knowledge of status of inmates; knowledge of proper operation of all communications and emergency equipment available to the facility.
  • Ability to use good judgment in accepting prisoners of various types (juveniles, injured parties, mentally or physically unfit, or intoxicated and physically violent); handle prisoners and knowledge of techniques in inmate control and precautionary measures in escorting and supervising inmates.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with other employees, county officials and officers, and the general public; deal firmly with potentially dangerous persons and maintain empathy for their personal needs.
  • Ability to maintain security and confidentiality according to department policy.
