Apprentice Heavy Mechanic

GTG Training is recruiting for an Apprentice Heavy Mechanic on behalf of an independent garage located in Cleland.

This is a full‑time opportunity to earn while you learn, gaining an SCQF automotive qualification and working in a garage workshop.

What Might a Typical Day in this Job Look Like?

You will be based within the garage workshop and will be involved in learning all aspects of vehicle repair and maintenance, including vehicle servicing, MOT preparation, removal, replacement and overhaul of major components and electrical fault diagnostics.

Units Covered
  • Materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices used in the automotive environment
  • Inspection of heavy vehicles
  • Diagnosing and rectifying chassis units including pneumatic braking systems and components
  • Diagnosing and rectifying vehicle engine and component faults, transmission and component faults and vehicle electrical system faults
  • Isolating and re‑energising high voltage systems on an electric vehicle
  • Ensuring your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Contributing to workplace good housekeeping
What will I learn?

Regular assessment and reviews will be undertaken within the apprentice's own workplace with dedicated mentors from GTG and the workplace, ensuring the development of necessary skills to successfully complete the apprenticeship.

You will train through GTG to SCQF Level 7 in Heavy Goods and Public Service Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.

Qualifications and Key Requirements
  • National 4 or above in English, Maths and either a Science or Technical Subject (or expected to gain).
  • Full UK driving licence preferred but not essential.
  • Willingness to learn, proactive approach, prioritisation and meeting timelines, and ability to work independently in a practical environment.
  • Dedication to the role, motivation to kickstart your automotive career.
