Overview
Locum Specialty Doctor in Anaesthesia — University Hospital Wishaw (UHW) is recruiting a Specialty Doctor to join the existing team of Anaesthetists and the wider multi-disciplinary team.
The Anaesthetics Department is part of the Surgical & Critical Care Directorate, which provides services within a 12 theatre main operating suite including 2 maternity theatres with 3 daily orthopaedic trauma theatres. UHW also houses NHS Lanarkshire’s regional maternity unit and the anaesthetic department provides 24/7 resident cover for obstetric anaesthesia. The maternity unit delivers approximately 5,000 babies per year. The rota has been split so that CEPOD out of hours cover and Obstetric Anaesthetic cover are now separate.
UHW is Lanarkshire’s trauma unit, providing surgical and anaesthetic services for all adult and paediatric trauma patients and functioning as a trauma centre integrated within the Scottish Trauma Network. There is extensive opportunity for regional anaesthesia and regular awake upper limb lists.
There is a 12-bed Adult Critical Care Unit (Level 2/3). There is also a 4-bed surgical Level 1 area and a 12-bed medical HDU. University Hospital Wishaw is a District General Hospital offering a varied practice including upper and lower general surgery, gynaecology, paediatric services with day-case paediatric surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, active acute and chronic pain services, and perioperative medicine with a preassessment clinic that includes a shared decision making clinic supported by a CPET service.
The post includes a preassessment session, which can be flexed depending on the successful candidate’s interests and expertise.
Situated in West Central Scotland, Wishaw is readily accessed from a wide area, sitting between Glasgow and Edinburgh for easy commuting.
ResponsibilitiesThe successful applicant would contribute to out-of-hours work in CEPOD theatre, obstetric anaesthesia and/or intensive care as required. The role includes involvement in perioperative medicine, preassessment, and areas of service improvement as agreed with the team.
Contract and ConditionsThe post is offered as a full-time position on a 10 PA basis. Applications will be considered from those wishing to work less than full-time. Proposals for additional SPA time from applicants are encouraged. In addition to the 1 PA for Non-DCC/SPA activities, the Board is supportive of applications for additional SPA time from individuals with well-developed ideas for improving services who demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement, patient safety (including human factors training), Medical Education, Research & Development, acting as an Appraiser, etc.
