Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care - 2 Posts

University Hospital Wishaw

University Hospital Wishaw (UHW) is looking to employ an enthusiastic and motivated Consultant Anaesthetist to join our team.

The successful applicants will join a department of 33 consultants and can chose to work on either our CEPOD on call rota, or our dedicated obstetric on call rota (or possibly a combination of both should that be of interest).

The Anaesthetics Department is part of the Surgical & Critical Care Directorate, which provides services within a 12 theatre main operating suite inclusive of 2 maternity theatres.

We have general surgery, upper GI, gynaecology and paediatrics on site in addition to orthopaedics.

UHW houses NHS Lanarkshire’s (NHSL) regional maternity unit and the anaesthetic department provides 24/7 resident cover providing all aspects of obstetric anaesthesia.

Our maternity unit has approx. 5000 deliveries per year with a caesarean section rate of approx. 30%. We use both Patient Controlled Epidural Analgesia and remifentanil PCA for labour analgesia. We also run a dedicated high risk obstetric anaesthesia clinic. Trainees from the West of Scotland School of Anaesthesia rotate through the unit for obstetric anaesthesia training. The obstetric unit is staffed by those with a special interest in obstetric anaesthesia and we have a dedicated obstetric on call rota with resident cover provided by trainees and SAS doctors.

We provide a weekly rolling in-house programme of postgraduate teaching and there are weekly ICM MDT meetings which are coupled with an educational/development forum. The department hosts a half day, monthly CME programme and there is an active hospital programme of multidisciplinary post-graduate education.

Our pre-operative assessment service is led by a dynamic team of interested Consultants and dedicated and skilled nursing staff. We are in the process of integrating a state of the art digital preassessment service into working practice. It is supported by shared decision making clinics and a cardiopulmonary exercise testing service with an opportunity to acquire CPET accreditation.

UHW hosts the NHSL trauma unit providing surgical and anaesthetic services for all adult and paediatric trauma patients requiring surgery within NHSL. We are now one of the busiest trauma units in Scotland. Ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia is performed for the majority of our trauma patients and we have a developed awake upper limb service.

We are also a regional trauma centre, integrated within the Scottish Trauma Network.

The NHS Lanarkshire orthopaedic upper limb service is based in UHW where we were the first in Scotland to offer day case shoulder arthroplasty.

We have acute and chronic pain services. Our acute pain service team is consultant led and includes two specialist nurses. An acute pain round is performed daily, promoting safe pain management and functional recovery following surgery.

This is a 12 bedded mixed critical care unit supporting level 2 and 3 patients, with around 600 admissions per year. The unit is accredited for ICM training through all stages of the FICM curriculum. We are actively involved in training programme for doctors in training, nursing staff, advanced critical care practitioners (ACCPs), and medical students. Consultants are committed to providing “weeks” of ICU care on a 1 in 10 basis, ensuring continuity of care.

The on-call rota is on a stand alone basis for ICU only, and has a 1in 10 frequency.

On site there is also a general surgical Level 1 area, a trauma level 1 area and a 12 bedded medical HDU. These are managed by separate clinical teams but there is regular assistance provided to these areas as required

University Hospital Wishaw is a District General Hospital allowing a varied practice and in addition to above hosts upper and lower general surgery, gynaecology, paediatric services with some paediatric surgery and trauma and orthopaedic services.

Situated in West Central Scotland, University Hospital Wishaw is readily accessed from a wide area. Geographically it sits between Glasgow and Edinburgh allowing ready access to and commuting from both.
