The Role

To provide clinical leadership and expert advice to all nursing staff in the delivery of care within Older Adult Medicine including recruitment, supervision, development and deployment of unit staff.
The post holder will have continual 24 hour responsibility for the management of the ward/department.
The post holder will undertake regular rotational cover of the Directorate or Hospital to provide leadership, deal with clinical issues, immediate management issues and deploy staff as appropriate.
To be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development of programmes of care, and/or the implementation and evaluation of these programmes ensuring the delivery of high quality care to patients.

In this key role, you will:

Responsible for the assessment of care needs and the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for patients to ensure delivery of a high standard of care.
Responsible for the management of the clinical environment, including work allocation, deployment and supervision of staff. As unit priorities change, this allocation will be continually assessed and tasks re-allocated.
Provide leadership encouragement and motivation to the nursing team to ensure that the patient/and their carers remain firmly at the centre of all care delivery.
Utilise advanced speciality skills to facilitate intervention for patients.
To manage all groups of staff within the clinical area on a daily basis, including induction, recruitment, appraisal, performance management, absence management and first level discipline and grievance.
To maintain effective communications with patients/carers and all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that the appropriate information is shared and patient/unit needs are met.
To set, monitor and evaluate standards of care within defined policies, procedures and protocols of the unit, directorate, divisional and professional regulatory body, to ensure high quality service.
Identify and report observed changes in the patients’ physical/psychological needs, taking appropriate action where necessary.
Responsible for maintaining patient records within agreed Guidelines for Records & Record Keeping (NMC, 2002)

What You’ll Bring :

Registered Nurse with valid NMC Registration
Educated to/working towards/operating at Degree Level
Post graduate expertise within speciality / area of practice that demonstrates the required breadth of knowledge required to lead safety, effectively and efficiently.
Comprehensive knowledge of clinical guidelines and standards within the speciality / area of practice.
Specialist knowledge and experience of relevant conditions, pathology, policies and procedures associated with the speciality/area of practice ensuring that the level of expertise can be utilised to deliver leadership within speciality / area of practice.
Management qualification or equivalent gained through experience and continuous professional development
Further education/evidence of Continuous Professional Development in area of speciality including study days/courses/post graduate qualification
