Environmental Engineer - Stack Monitoring

Culham, Oxfordshire (2 days on site, 3 days flexible)

6-month contract | Full-time | Start ASAP

£56-61/hour Inside IR35

Are you an Environmental Engineer with experience in emissions monitoring, radiological assessment, or air quality compliance? This is a unique opportunity to lead critical environmental studies supporting the safe and compliant operation of advanced engineering and research facilities.

This role will focus on evaluating stack monitoring arrangements and assessing the feasibility of developing in-house monitoring capabilities. You'll play a key role in ensuring compliance with environmental and radiological regulations while helping shape future monitoring strategies.

The Opportunity
  • Stack Monitoring Feasibility Study – analysing historical emissions data, compliance requirements, and monitoring effectiveness
  • In-House Monitoring Capability Study – evaluating the feasibility, requirements, and roadmap for internalising stack monitoring capability

Your work will directly influence environmental compliance, regulatory engagement, and long-term monitoring strategy.

Key Responsibilities Environmental & Radiological Assessment
  • Review historical stack monitoring data, including tritium, radiological, and hazardous material emissions
  • Analyse operational trends, contamination patterns, and measurement accuracy
  • Evaluate compliance with UK environmental regulations, including EPR and IRR

  • Assess Safety Case requirements and Best Available Techniques (BAT) obligations
  • Define monitoring data requirements for regulatory submissions
Audit Existing Stack Monitoring Systems, Technologies, and Processes
  • Assess feasibility of developing in-house monitoring capability
  • Identify required equipment, analytical tools, and competencies
  • Develop recommendations for improved monitoring frequencies and methodologies
  • Produce a roadmap for capability development, including cost and resource planning
Technical Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Produce detailed technical reports and recommendations
  • Apply QA/QC standards to data analysis and reporting
  • Engage with internal stakeholders across environmental, safety, and operational teams
  • Present findings and recommendations to senior management and technical committees
What We’re Looking For Essential
  • Degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline
  • Experience in emissions monitoring, environmental compliance, or stack monitoring
  • Strong data analysis and technical reporting skills
  • Knowledge of UK environmental and radiological regulatory frameworks
  • Experience interpreting environmental or radiological monitoring data
Highly Desirable
  • Experience with radiological monitoring, particularly tritium emissions
  • MCERTS certification or emissions monitoring experience
  • Knowledge of Environment Agency regulatory requirements
  • Understanding of BAT, EPR, IRR
    17, or COMAH regulations
  • Experience with stack sampling, CEMS, or laboratory analysis
