What to Expect
This role sits within the Technical Quality department. The Senior Cubing Quality Engineer works alongside a wider team of Quality Engineers, each with their own specialism, and reports into the Product Line Technical Quality Manager.
Purpose of the roleThe role of Senior Cubing Quality Engineer is critical to the achievement of Exterior and Interior Quality on all future McLaren products. The role will require you to work closely with suppliers and internal stakeholders to ensure all future cubes are introduced to budget, on time and according to the required McLaren standard. This role will also see you working with both internal and external customers to achieve gap and flush targets on all new products.
WhatYou’ll Do
- Develop and manage the cubing events and timing plan at each build phase across all new products including the BOM for each build phase so that all parts & equipment are available when required.
- Manage and agree the design intent and supplier selection process for the engineering cube to ensure delivery is on time, to plan and to budget.
- Responsible for the cubing area regarding key elements such as Health and Safety, equipment and general cleanliness of the area as part of maintaining a safe & effective working environment.
- Supplier management (quality and programme), validation of the cube at supplier prior to shipment to MPC, ensuring a smooth handover so that on-site activities can be completed to plan.
- Achieving all project gateway milestones is key to the successful delivery of all new products so you will support in the delivery of all relevant program objectives to ensure this happens.
- Joint check build support / Event planning – Joint check is a process by where an engineering cube is used to develop the components and processes on a nominal gauge. This supports the drive for a seamless launch, with improved part maturation, while also supporting the validation of the engineering solution.
- Lead and manage other metrologists during busy periods and/or through future growth to meet programme requirements.
- As the Senior Cubing Quality Engineer, you will understand how the cubing process sits within the product development cycle, and the relevant stakeholders for cube activities.
- It is desired that you will have an appreciation of low volume vehicle production and McLaren brand requirements.
Degree qualified in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
- Measurement capability using full CMM, Faro Arm (or equivalent) and scanning.
- Demonstratable experience in the development of previous engineering cubes, including specification development, procurement and buy-off.
- A Methodical approach to work with strong analytical skills, with a high level of problem-solving capability.
- An understanding of SPC, statistics and process capabilities.
- Demonstratable understanding of GD&T/GPS, to BS8888 & or ASME Y14.5 standard.
- A working knowledge of CATIA V5 / V6.
- Knowledge of SAP, purchase requisitioning and supplier auditing are desirable.
- New product and series development experience in the Automotive Industry.
- 8D or Practical Problem Solving (PPS) - demonstratable experience of problem-solving techniques and the tools used.
- Experience in the launch of low volume vehicles into the production environment.
- People management experience would be advantageous, but not critical.
- Experience of working in a matrix environment.
- Self-starter capable of using initiative.
