JOB SPECIFICATION Mechanical Inspector About the Role

The Mechanical Inspector is responsible for carrying out inspection activities throughout the product lifecycle, including incoming goods inspection, in-process inspection & first-off and first article inspection. The role is critical in ensuring components and assemblies conform to engineering drawings, customer requirements and company quality standards. Working closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Procurement & Supply Chain teams, the Mechanical Inspector will help maintain product quality, support continuous improvement initiatives and assist in the investigation of quality concerns.

The position would suit an individual with a strong inspection background, experience of precision engineering and a proactive approach to problem solving. The position reports to the Quality Lead & Laboratory Manager.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Incoming inspection of machined, fabricated, moulded, finished and purchased components
  • In-process and final inspection of sub-assemblies and finished products
  • Performing dimensional, visual and functional inspections using conventional and advanced metrology equipment
  • Programming and operating CMM equipment
  • Conducting First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs) in accordance with customer and company requirements
  • Producing inspection records, FAIR documentation, control plans and quality reports
  • Conducting machine shop first-off inspections and batch inspections
  • Supporting supplier quality activities, including first shipment verification and supplier issue investigations
  • Raising and documenting non-conformances and supporting root cause investigations and corrective actions
  • Ensuring inspection activities are completed accurately and within required timescales
  • Maintaining accurate records within the ERP system
  • Ensuring all measuring equipment is handled and used correctly
  • Maintaining high standards of housekeeping and workplace organisation
  • Following all company Health & Safety procedures and requirements
What We Are Looking For
  • Essential Minimum 3 years' experience in a mechanical inspection role within a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
  • Good understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
  • Experience using conventional inspection equipment including:
    Micrometers Vernier calipers Height gauges DTIs Surface plates Bore gauges Thread gauges Slip gauges
  • Experience operating and programming CMM equipment
  • Experience producing FAIRs and inspection reports
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach
  • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively across departments
  • Competent in Microsoft Office applications
  • Desirable:
    Experience using Aberlink CMM systems
  • Experience with non-contact measurement systems and optical metrology equipment
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 quality management systems
  • Experience with in precision engineering or low-volume, high-complexity manufacturing environments
What You Will Be Getting

This is a full time, permanent position, 40 hours per week and the standard staff working hours are applicable - Monday to Friday 07:30am - 4:00pm with half an hour lunch break, with flexibility on the start and finish times in line with our client's core working hours policy.

  • The salary for this position is IRO £40,000 to £45,000 per annum, depending on experience and background
  • Additional production bonus (variable percentage of basic salary payable monthly in arrears); linked to the value of goods invoiced from the UK factory base
  • Aviva private pension scheme, in line with Government legislation and guidelines. Currently 5% employee contribution and 3% employer contribution
