Job Summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery with a special interest in Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstruction to join The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. This is a fixed term post to join a team of 6 Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. The role supports Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust Head and Neck Oncology in collaboration with New Cross Hospital.

Main duties- Provide and develop an integrated Head and Neck service for the Trust, involving all disciplines including primary and tertiary care.
- Participate in the structural development of the Head and Neck service, treatment protocols and guidelines and extend knowledge in the management of Head and Neck conditions.
- Provide a consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and Primary Care.
- Work with other members of the Maxillofacial team to provide a comprehensive general surgical service to the Trust, Primary Care Trusts and General Practitioners.
- Participate in the Maxillofacial on‑call rota to ensure emergency services are provided out‑of‑normal working hours.
- Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the specialty, including appraisal of SHOs and SpRs.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
- Take part, with Consultant and Senior colleagues, in medical audit and research as appropriate.
- Ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Consultants and their team provide comprehensive services across three NHS Trusts:
New Cross Hospital (major inpatient), Russells Hall Hospital and Manor Hospital (outpatient and day case). The role also supports Shrewsbury and Telford Head and Neck Oncology in collaboration with New Cross Hospital.
The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust is a recognised Cancer Centre offering Head and Neck services, including major reconstruction with free flaps, under a specialised MDT and joint oncology clinics. Support staff include Clinical Nurse Specialists, Mac Millan Cancer Support, Speech & Language Therapists, Dieticians, Palliative and Hospice care, a highly skilled Maxillofacial Prosthetics Team, and a forthcoming Restorative Consultant.
Management of skin malignancy has become a significant part of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery over the last five years. The service is delivered as day‑stay procedures within the department and a specialist day‑care unit.
Person SpecificationEssential Qualifications
- Full registration and a licence to practise with the GMC/GDC
- MDDB/BDS or equivalent
- FRCS or equivalent
- On the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT or CESR (CP) from the date of interview

- Higher Medical Degree

- Wide experience in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Desirable Experience
- Experience in H&N Oncology and Reconstruction
Essential Research and Audit
- Evidence of audit and the implementation of change following the audit
Desirable Research and Audit
- Relevant research published in a peer‑reviewed journal
