Consultant Job overview

This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established team at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust. We are a very successful department, with twin site working at New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital (Trauma and elective sites)

The post is for a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with specialist interest in Spinal Surgery. We are looking for a Consultant who is fellowship trained in Spinal Surgery to add to the existing complement of consultants. The candidate will provide support in trauma as per departmental need.

The current on-call rota is a 1:10 rota, with a 7- day working commitment. Applications are welcomed from candidates with FRCS (or equivalent qualification) who are on the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery or who will be within 6 months of obtaining their CCT/CESR at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to provide a General Trauma and Orthopaedic Service, with a specialist interest in spinal surgery. A spinal fellowship is essential.

Flexible working will be required to fully utilise hospital facilities such as theatres and outpatients. The post holder will also be expected to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and to participate in audit and clinical governance activities

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The normal duties of Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics would be undertaken. This includes ward rounds, clinics, administration, teaching and inpatient support to colleagues in addition to take part in the rolling trauma on call rota.

The trauma service is currently covered by a 1 in 10 week rolling rota encompassing 2 Consultants.

The post has secretarial support which includes a medical secretary shared with 1 other consultant and further typing support, on-site office facilities will be provided.

On-Call Arrangements and Cover of Patients

As we work split sites – we have two consultants on call 7 days a week. This is a 1 in 10 rota as a pair and so rotates between Consultant A and Consultant B responsibilities. 1 consultant will be consultant A Saturday to Monday and then consultant B Tuesday to Friday. The following rota it will alternate to the other consultant being A over the weekend.

Consultant A – 17:00 from Friday to 17:00 on Monday

Consultant B – 17:00 Monday to 17:00 on Friday

Consultant A undertakes Fracture Clinic in the morning and Trauma theatre in the afternoon and evening during the weekdays or all day theatre on weekends. They are non-resident on-call overnight.

Consultant B has Trauma Theatre in the morning followed by ward rounds in the afternoon until 17:00 during the week and ward round only d rounds entail reviewing every orthopaedic patient including paediatrics, on a daily basis and liaising with the named consultant when required for elective and trauma patients. Shared care is provided for patients with other specialities including with paediatrics where required.
