City of Wolverhampton Council is offering an exciting opportunity to join us as a Structural Engineer Degree Apprentice. This role allows you to earn a salary, gain hands‑on experience, and study towards a full engineering degree at the same time.
You will collaborate with qualified engineers, contributing to real projects across the city while developing the skills and knowledge needed for a professional engineering career.
About the apprenticeshipThis is a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship in Civil / Structural Engineering. You will start at Level 4 and progress through to Level 6, combining work‑based learning with formal academic study.
Throughout the apprenticeship, you will be supported to:
- Develop technical, analytical, and practical engineering skills
- Apply what you learn at university directly to real‑world projects
- Build your experience towards long‑term professional registration
As a Structural Engineer Apprentice, you will support the team with inspections, design, and maintenance of council‑owned structures, including bridges, buildings, and other assets.
Your duties will include:
- Assisting with structural inspections, surveys, and site investigations
- Supporting the design and assessment of structures using concrete, steel, masonry, and timber
- Preparing drawings, calculations and technical reports, using AutoCAD and engineering software
- Attending site visits and helping monitor construction works
Supporting compliance with Building Regulations, Health & Safety, and council procedures - Collaborating with engineers, consultants, and contractors
- Completing all elements of your apprenticeship training and maintaining a development log
Please note the qualification criteria for the Civil Engineering academic programme is set by the University for entry onto the apprenticeship and the City of Wolverhampton Council will be liaising with University of Wolverhampton prior to ensure candidates have met the entry criteria prior to any conditional offer of employment.
EssentialFor this apprenticeship programme we require applicants to have achieved one of the following admissions conditions which must include the following subject areas of Mathematics and Physical Science.
- A Levels - grades CCC or above (out of the three A Levels, one A Level must be in Mathematics, and one A Level must be in a Physical Science)
- BTEC L3 Extended Diploma grades MMM or above
- GCSE passes at Grade 4 or above in English
- GCSE passes at Grade 4 or above in Maths
- Obtaining the post will be dependent on firstly successfully completing an interview process with the Council and then being accepted by the University to study for BEng (Hons) Civil and Transportation Engineering.
- All applications should include relevant grades in relation to the eligibility criteria within their application and documentation will be required to evidence this. We will be unable to consider any applications which do not include this. Please note if you are a candidate who is currently in their last year of studying, evidence of predicted grades will be required at application stage.
- Your application should also include information on why you want to train within the relating sector and current knowledge of the sector.
