Senior Theatre Practitioner/Team Leader Ophthalmic Theatres

Responsible for the assessment of care needs, development and evaluation of care plans, implementation of high‑standard patient care, and teaching and supervision of nursing, ODP and other staff. Lead a team of Theatre Practitioners and manage a theatre area or equivalent responsibility when required.

Job Responsibilities
  • Professional:
    • Practice in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct.
    • Deliver care that is professional, courteous and empathetic, respecting cultural backgrounds.
    • Maintain strong communication links and cooperation with other health professionals and disciplines.
    • Engage in relevant nursing research and mentor the Theatre Team, setting learning objectives.
    • Keep up to date with peri‑operative developments and future trends.
    • Create a positive learning environment and contribute to innovative patient care techniques.
  • Managerial:
    • Coordinate planning of nursing care, manage staffing levels, skill mix, competence and training.
    • Ensure statutory standards, Trust procedures and patient safety in the theatre area.
    • Plan duty rotas and organise annual leave to sustain continuity of care.
    • Collaborate with other disciplines and voluntary agencies for cohesive patient care.
    • Investigate incidents, accidents and complaints, and maintain equipment and stock levels.
    • Conduct appraisals, identify training needs and provide adequate training and development.
    • Ensure compliance with statutory training and attend further development courses as required.
    • Lead and motivate junior and senior staff, encouraging teamwork and good working relationships.
  • Clinical:
    • Maintain specialist knowledge and continuously audit and improve quality and standards of care.
    • Ensure accurate and legible nursing and theatre records in line with NMC/HCP standards.
    • Assume responsibility for drug custody, controlled drug checks and reporting discrepancies.
    • Lead the teaching and supervision of pre‑ and post‑registration students and the multidisciplinary team.
    • If experienced recovery practitioner, extubate patients post‑anesthesia.
    • Act as first assistant to the surgeon if competent or certified.
    • Take leadership for a designated area in agreement with the Head Nurse.
