Paediatric Recovery Nurse

Leicester Royal Infirmary Theatre Recovery are looking for a registered paediatric nurse to join our nursing team.

The Recovery area cares for both paediatric and adult patients in the immediate postoperative period. Although the majority of working hours will be within paediatrics, there will be an expectation to work in adult recovery when patient acuity demands. Full training is provided to enable independent practice in all recovery areas.

The role is varied, covering multiple specialties and three outside recovery areas, ensuring no two days are identical.

Locally, many paediatric nurses are supported by adult nurses with paediatric competencies. The successful candidate will help develop paediatric training opportunities for adult nurses.

• Maintain patient airways in the immediate postoperative period.
• Manage post‑operative pain and nausea.
• Provide reassurance to patients.
• Act as an autonomous practitioner, escalating concerns and administering care to improve patient condition.
• Communicate with the multidisciplinary team (MDT).
• Assist in improving paediatric skills of adult nurses working in recovery.
• Meet discharge criteria and hand over ongoing care needs upon discharge.
• Document care in written and electronic systems.

• Evidence of ongoing professional development.
• Satisfactory attendance record throughout training or current post.
• Willingness to undertake new clinical practices, education and training.
• Qualified as a registered nurse (NMC registered).
• In possession of or willing to pursue a recognised NMC/HCPC teaching and assessing qualification.
• Evidence of post‑registration educational continuing development or reflective portfolio.
• Degree in nursing or health‑related subject.
• Clinical experience in the paediatric recovery setting or equivalent speciality.
• Knowledge of clinical risk management and governance in the NHS.
• Audit or research experience.

• Decision‑making and prioritisation of clinical workload.
• Understanding of role responsibility in efficient use of resources.
• Ability to maintain accurate patient records and effective communication with multidisciplinary teams.
• Good verbal and written communication skills across cultures.
• Basic IT knowledge for documentation.
• Strong analytical and judgement skills.
• Compliance with occupational health fit‑for‑work requirements and physical ability.
