Penguin Recruitment is delighted to be supporting a well:established planning and heritage consultancy with a strong track record of helping clients successfully secure planning permission and deliver property development projects.
The consultancy works across a wide range of sectors including commercial and residential development, advising businesses such as hotel and leisure groups, house builders, land promoters, retailers, property developers and private organisations, as well as public sector clients and housing associations.
They are now seeking a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Heritage Consultant to join their growing team and contribute to the continued development of their heritage services.

The Role

The successful candidate will provide specialist advice on heritage and archaeological matters, working closely with planning colleagues, developers, architects and local authorities. The role will involve supporting projects from early:stage advice through to planning applications and post:consent stages, ensuring proposals align with relevant heritage legislation, national planning policy and best practice.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist advice on heritage and archaeology matters to clients, ensuring compliance with planning policies and relevant legislation.
  • Prepare Heritage Statements, Archaeological Desk:

    Based Assessments, Impact Assessments, and other supporting documentation for planning and listed building consent applications.
  • Assess the significance of historic buildings, sites and landscapes and provide recommendations to enhance or preserve heritage significance while minimising potential harm.
  • Liaise with local planning authorities, Historic England and other stakeholders to negotiate heritage:related planning matters.
  • Conduct site visits and heritage appraisals to assess the potential impacts of proposed developments on heritage assets.
  • Provide guidance on conservation best practice, including materials, repair methods and appropriate approaches to managing change to heritage assets.
  • Stay up to date with relevant legislation, policy updates and best practice guidance in heritage and archaeology.
  • Support clients throughout the planning process, from pre:application advice to post:consent conditions.
  • Work efficiently across multiple projects while supporting and mentoring more junior team members where appropriate.
  • Assist in identifying new business opportunities through existing and new client relationships.
  • Attend networking events and industry activities to support business development and promote the consultancys services.
  • Contribute to professional content and marketing initiatives, including industry insights and project updates where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate project records, time management systems and forecasting reports as required.
Key Skills And Experience
  • A degree in Archaeology, Architecture, Planning, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with in a heritage consultancy, planning consultancy, or a similar role.
  • Experience preparing heritage assessments and supporting planning applications.
  • Experience writing appeal statements and attending hearings would be advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of UK heritage legislation, including the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 and the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex information clearly to clients, stakeholders and local authorities.
