We’re seeking a hands‑on power electronics engineer to own the design and development of switch‑mode power supplies (SMPS) for ruggedized industrial and military applications. You’ll architect and deliver converters from 80 W to > 2.5 kW, across varied topologies and device technologies (Si MOSFETs, GaN, SiC) from concept through qualification and production.
What you’ll do- Own SMPS designs end‑to‑end: requirements, architecture, simulation, schematic/PCB, bring‑up, validation, qualification, and release.
- Select and implement the right topology (buck/boost, flyback/forward, half‑/full‑bridge, phase‑shifted full‑bridge, LLC, interleaved PFC, SEPIC/Ćuk, multiphase, synchronous rectification).
- Ruggedization awareness: specify electrical protections and design rules for harsh environments; partner with mechanical/thermal teams on enclosures, coatings, potting, and cooling as needed (you provide electrical inputs, they own the mechanics/CFD).
- Leverage GaN/SiC and advanced gate‑drive techniques for high‑frequency/high‑power‑density designs; manage EMI/EMC and switching transients.
- Perform control‑loop design/compensation (voltage‑mode, peak/average current‑mode, digital control where appropriate).
- Develop magnetics (planar and wound): specify cores, windings, insulation systems, and thermal paths (detailed thermal modeling supported by ME/TE as needed).
- Conduct derating and reliability analysis (FMEA, MTBF); coordinate formal testing with test engineering.
- Plan and execute EMI/EMC and environmental qualification (pre‑scan & formal) with lab support; close design actions to pass.
- Collaborate with firmware on digital power interfaces (PMBus/I²C/UART), telemetry, and protection.
- Create DFM/DFT artifacts, support in‑house manufacturing, and guide test‑engineering on fixtures and automated production tests.
- Document thoroughly: specs, design notes, test plans/reports, and manufacturing packages.
- 7+ years professional (not research) experience designing SMPS across 80 W– 2.5 kW for harsh/regulated environments (industrial, defense, aerospace, transportation, energy).
- Proven breadth across topologies and devices (Si MOSFET, GaN, SiC; IGBT a plus).
- Strong power‑stage design (loss modeling, device selection, gate drive, snubbers/clamps, low‑ESL/ESR layout), control theory, and magnetics.
- Hands‑on EMI/EMC mitigation and a record of successful certifications/quals.
- Proficiency with simulation & CAD:
Spice/PLECS/PSIM (or equivalent), MATLAB/Simulink, Altium; lab gear (DMM, scope, power analyzer, LISN, Bode analyzer, spectrum analyzer, vector network analyzer, electronic load and etc.). - PCB layout for HV/HF power (isolation barriers, creepage/clearance, current loops, Kelvin sensing).
- Strong analytical/problem‑solving skills; clear technical documentation.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Planar magnetics and high power‑density packaging.
- LabVIEW for test automation.
- Security clearance or eligibility.
- BSEE required;
MSEE preferred (power electronics focus).
This is a 100% on‑site position in Wood Dale, Illinois.
