Senior Tunnels Engineer

Mott Mac Donald is seeking professionals to join our ever‑expanding tunnel team. We are currently looking for versatile civil, geotechnical or structural engineers in NY/NJ to serve as a senior project engineer in our tunnels resource group with a focus on underground design and construction projects. Experience in the transportation and water/wastewater sectors would be considered an asset. You'll be a career‑minded individual with aspirations of working on challenging and exciting infrastructure projects.

• Support the delivery of our existing portfolio of tunnelling projects in the U.S. and Canada.
• Oversight of staff and execution of field investigation programs to collect data for use in design, condition assessments and the preparation of Reports.
• Contribution to detailed analyses for our projects involving tunnels and underground structures.
• Development of field instrumentation programs and evaluation of collected data.
• Management of staff producing design solutions, reports, and contributions to/reviews of specifications and drawings.
• Writing reports for submission to clients, including design‑related technical memoranda and Reports.
• Direct client engagement working with guidance from senior management; including liaising with clients, responding to queries, and attending design and progress meetings.
• Contribution to and preparation of proposals for submission to clients.
• Ability to lay out/develop a design program and independently manage a team of staff.
• Managing and mentoring junior/graduate engineers and supporting their development.

• Bachelors in civil, structural or geotechnical engineering is required and a Masters in a related field is preferred.
• Professional engineer (PE) license in New Jersey, New York or ability to obtain a license within 12 months.
• NCTI Certified is preferred.
• 8-15 years of experience in engineering consultancy (not including education), experience in New York preferred.
• Proficient in the use of structural software: STRAND7, SAP, STAAD or equivalent.
• Proficient in the use of geotechnical software, this may include Plaxis, Geo Studio packages/Slide, Rocscience packages, geotechnical data management (GINT/Holebase). A working knowledge of BIM tools (Bentley/Autodesk) would also be advantageous.
• Demonstratable record in design with experience in geotechnical engineering, ground characterization for soil and rock and a working knowledge of concrete, steel and foundation design.
• Strong references from past managers or clients.
• Interest in underground design and construction for the transport, water or waste water sectors and multidisciplinary working experience would also be advantageous.
