U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) offers those interested in a career in law enforcement an opportunity to work with a team of professionals protecting America. You will be part of the Department of Homeland Security workforce, protecting American interests and securing our nation. This is a full-time, entry-level CBPO position with a career ladder and benefits package.

• Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations.
• Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
• Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances.
• Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States.
• Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband.

You will be asked to provide your preference for one of the following mission-critical locations. The preference locations listed above are expected to have vacancies in the future; if not, you may be offered a duty location in another geographic location within the United States based on operational needs. Locations include a wide range of U.S. locations and territories.

Annual base salary for newly appointed CBPOs varies. Locality pay varies by duty location. A fully trained CBPO is eligible for overtime pay in addition to starting salary. This position has a career ladder (GS-5, GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, GS-12) with promotions after completing 52 weeks in each grade level. Benefits include health and dental insurance, leave programs, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan.

Location-based recruitment incentives may apply: 25% recruitment incentive for certain locations (e.g., San Francisco, Otay Mesa, San Ysidro, Tecate, CA, and others), 15% for other locations, and 10% for some locations. Salary ranges and incentives vary by duty location.

You may qualify at GS-5 or GS-7 (and on some conditions GS-9) based on experience, education, and/or a combination of both.

Summary:

• GS-5: 3 years of general work experience or a bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and experience.
• GS-7: 1 year of specialized work experience at the next lower grade, or a bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement, or a graduate-level education, or a combination of experience and education. If you have prior law enforcement or military experience, you may qualify at GS-9.

Other requirements include U.S. citizenship, residency criteria, age restrictions unless exempted by specific service history, and veterans’ preference eligibility. Training includes a paid pre-academy orientation and CBP Field Operations Academy at FLETC, with additional Spanish training for certain duty locations.
