Job Summary

Rutgers University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) is seeking a Per Diem Staff Nurse for the Adult Diagnostic Treatment Center located in Avenel, NJ. The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of patient health care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. The role collaborates with a multidisciplinary team, including medical professionals and security officers, within a correctional environment.

Functions are guided by nursing protocols and the Nurse may serve as a team leader when assigned.

• Provide direct and indirect nursing care to meet the physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of inmate patients (18–64 years) and geriatric patients (65+) as well as supporting family within the correctional system framework.
• Utilize effective communication skills by demonstrating respect, concern, and courtesy in all interpersonal relationships.
• Attend appropriate in‑services and continuing education offerings to obtain and maintain necessary skills.
• Participate in offering education to inmates, security officers, and other health‑care team members.
• Participate in in‑service meetings and educational programs either as an attendee or as a teacher, as arranged and approved by supervisor.

Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.

• CPR certification.
• RN license in New Jersey.
• Valid driver’s license and possession of a vehicle or alternative means of transportation between sites.

• Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent preferred.
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a correctional setting preferred.

As a first responder, must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. Must be physically able to lift and carry an emergency treatment bag (up to 45 lb.) upstairs and assist in lifting and rotating patients who cannot ambulate (up to 50 lb.).

Hourly rate: $57.01/hr minimum salary: $59.01. Mid‑range and maximum salaries are $59.01. Final offer may vary based on qualifications, experience, and departmental or grant funding.

Standard hours: 19.00. Daily shift: rotating. Position requires full onsite work arrangement. Term of appointment: staff—12 month. Position status: per diem. Pay designation:
People Soft.
