The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to address diverse health‑care needs with an ambulatory focus, collaborates with health‑care professionals and security personnel in a correctional environment, follows nursing protocols, and leads the team when assigned.
Key duties include:
- Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of inmate‑patients (18–64 years and 65+ years) and their families within the correctional framework.
- Utilizes effective communication skills, demonstrating respect, concern, and courtesy in all interpersonal relationships.
- Attends in‑services and continuing‑education offerings to maintain necessary skills.
- Offers education to inmates, security officers, and other health‑care team members.
- Participates in in‑service meetings and educational programs as an attendee or teacher, as approved by supervisor.
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in New Jersey.
- CPR certification.
- RN license in New Jersey.
- Valid driver’s license and own vehicle or alternative transportation between sites.
- Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of one year experience in a correctional setting preferred.
- Medical, prescription drug, and dental coverage.

As a first responder, the nurse must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes, lift and carry an emergency treatment bag weighing up to 45 pounds upstairs, and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).
