Do you have 1-3 years of supervisory and project execution experience in the stormwater system operations, maintenance, and repair industry? Have you planned and overseen construction activities for one or multiple crews on horizontal construction projects, stormwater maintenance, dredging, or similar work? Prince William County is seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Assistant Superintendent for Maintenance and Operations, overseeing County crews as well as subcontractors.
About This Role:This Assistant Superintendent position will report to and support the Principal Engineer in coordinating, supervising, and overseeing three- to five-person crews performing various stormwater system maintenance and operations tasks. Applicants must be able to read and interpret reports, work orders, plans and specifications and develop quantities for proposed and ongoing work. The ability to anticipate constructability issues and potential conflicts is essential.
Strong candidates will have working knowledge of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) regulations and the Prince William County Design and Construction Standards Manual. Must be able to accurately run basic calculations for determining grade and excavation yardage/tonnage quantities. Strong conflict resolution skills are required, both in managing personnel and in addressing unforeseen conditions and conflicts on job sites.
Communication skills, both oral and written, are critical to successful interactions with County officials, staff, and the public. The ideal candidate will be able to successfully coordinate and collaborate with engineering staff, surveyors, the Assistant Director, Field Supervisors, and subcontractors to ensure successful project completion. All work must be performed in compliance with OSHA regulations and applicable construction guidelines.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. and 3-5 years of related experience, including 1-3 years of supervision.
- Related experience includes:
- Coordination, supervision, and oversight of inspection and/or construction crews performing drainage and/or sanitary sewer tasks;
- Prioritizing daily crew work activities to achieve mid- to long-term program objectives;
- Reading and interpreting construction plans and specifications, work order requests, and as-builts;
- Ability to review, investigate, and evaluate computer based inventory and GIS systems to generate proposed solutions to requests for repair/maintenance.
- 3-5 years experience operating heavy construction equipment for drainage maintenance/repair/installation or related activities, including minor maintenance and repair of the equipment;
- Working knowledge of excavations and underground pipe installation;
- Inspection of construction activities for compliance with scope of work and quality standards;
- Developing basic quantity “take-offs” for proposed construction work of various sizes;
- Anticipating, identifying, and resolving constructability concerns, both in plans and unforeseen conditions in the field;
- Conflict resolution for direct subordinates and with citizens.
- Certification in Trenching and Excavation, Confined Space, Chainsaw Safety, Minimum of OSHA 10;
- Proficient in use of office software such as email, spreadsheets, and word processing.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain less than 10 negative points.
- Must foster a positive work environment with managers, subordinates, and citizens.
- Position may be required to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently. Position will be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, and typical industrial/construction activities.

$70,921 to $97,968
