Phlebotomist

Summary

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, trouble shooting, training and making work flow recommendations.

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data and decontamination, update patient information.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear but courteous manner.
• Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Fully understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
• Check all test requisitions or computer label against script to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport and store sample according to required temperature, placing samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes and labeling properly.
• Follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department trainings.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required in some states.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED. 0‑2 years of experience.
