Prince William Public Libraries (PWPL) is looking for an Assistant Division Chief to take a leadership role in managing our Technical Services and Support division. This is a unique opportunity to directly manage staff, oversee the operation that powers a 12‑branch system, and work with the Division Chief to direct a $2.1 million collection budget. About This Role:The Assistant Division Chief plays a key leadership role in the Materials Services Division, providing oversight, guidance, and strategic direction to multiple units. This position directly supervises and supports four paraprofessionals in the Cataloging Unit, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and adherence to established cataloging policies and standards.
The Assistant Division Chief also manages the Physical Processing and Courier Unit Supervisors, coordinating daily operations and workflow to maintain efficient materials handling and delivery across the library system.
Working closely with the Division Chief, this position helps shape and implement overall Materials Services policies, procedures, and priorities, including participation in budget management and spending allocation decisions for materials.
Additionally, the Assistant Division Chief oversees the library’s subscription databases, ensuring they are effectively maintained, accessible, and aligned with the system’s collection goals and user needs.
Minimum Requirements:- Master’s Degree in library or information science
- 2 years public library experience
- 1 year supervisory experience
Preferred candidates will demonstrate a combination of leadership, management, and technical services experience.
Experience in:
- Supervising, mentoring, and developing staff in a library or similar organizational setting.
- Managing daily operations within technical services, materials management, or related library support units.
- Overseeing cataloging activities or applying cataloging principles and standards to ensure accuracy and consistency in bibliographic records.
- Coordinating or managing physical processing, courier services, or other support service functions within a library system.
- Developing and maintaining library collections, including selection, acquisitions, and collection evaluation.
- Managing or supporting library budgets, including materials funds and spending priorities.
- Working with integrated library systems (ILS) and other library technologies to streamline workflows and enhance service delivery.
- Developing or implementing policies, procedures, and best practices for technical or materials services divisions.
- Collaborating across departments to improve efficiency and ensure excellent internal customer service.
- Communicating complex or technical information clearly and effectively to both staff and leadership.
The position may require travel to other branches within the system. A DMV check will be conducted for employees who drive while on County business.
Work Schedule:Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00‑5:00.
Hiring Salary Range$82,777.50–96,905.25 yearly
