Prince William County’s Advocacy, Prevention & Protection Division Intake Team is on the front lines every day gathering reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of children and adults. This specialized unit transforms concern into action by adhering to established policies and procedures, actively listening, and accurately assessing each situation.

About This Role

In this critical role, you will quickly assess complex information and make sound, timely decisions that directly impact the safety and well-being of vulnerable children and adults. The ideal candidate will have strong research and investigative skills, including the ability to follow up on unresolved questions and synthesize information to ensure a comprehensive understanding.

Applicants should possess a strong working knowledge of Child Protective Services (CPS) and Adult Protective Services (APS) policies, as well as knowledge of community resources and services available to support individuals in crisis. We’re looking for professionals who bring excellent customer service skills and can calmly, respectfully, and professionally guide callers through the sensitive process of reporting concerns. We also value candidates who are eager to keep learning and growing through continuous professional development.

Additionally, candidates must be highly organized and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment, ensuring that all tasks are completed accurately and within required time frames. This position will also be expected to provide proofreading support for peer documentation, helping ensure reports are clear, concise, and professionally written in accordance with agency standards.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a human services field; or a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in any field with a minimum of two years of appropriate and related experience in a human services area.

Preferences

Three or more years of experience in the following areas:

  • Managing Child Protective Services (CPS) and/or Adult Protective Services (APS) allegations, including intake, assessment, and documentation.
  • Providing crisis intervention, preferably within child and/or adult welfare settings, with the ability to respond effectively and compassionately under pressure.
  • Providing peer support and informal supervision, including mentoring new staff, offering guidance on complex cases, and promoting adherence to best practices and agency standards.
  • Fostering a collaborative team environment, encouraging professional growth and accountability among colleagues.
  • Working within strict response timelines and maintaining composure in high-pressure situations.
  • Engaging and assessing family strengths and needs to provide appropriate services.
  • Interpreting and applying policies and procedures in crisis situations.
  • Assessing risk and ensuring the safety of children and families.
  • Entering information into OASIS and Peer Place.
