Overview

In this role, you will guide elementary‑age participants through sports, arts, STEM, and other hands‑on learning activities at a Y Before and After‑School Enrichment (BASE) program designed to provide a safe and caring place for students outside of the classroom. You will help teach teamwork and social‑emotional learning to kids as they grow and learn while encouraging skill building, creative exploration, physical activity, and most of all, fun.

  • Part‑time, onsite position.
  • Hours vary by school/location:
    Monday‑Friday 6:45 am – start of school;
    Monday‑Friday end of school – 6 pm. Full‑day programming on non‑school days and early release days.
  • MMR vaccination required for licensed school‑age programs per Department of Children, Youth and Family requirements.
  • Rapidly accruing paid time off (PTO) available immediately upon hire.
  • Individual membership to the YMCA of Greater Seattle and free access to mental‑health resources.
Responsibilities
  • Implement culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate activities within the curriculum in accordance with Y Youth Development goals.
  • Supervise a group of children to ensure their health and safety and provide a positive experience for each child.
  • Provide guidance to staff/volunteers overseeing activities of groups of children.
  • Communicate day‑to‑day, confidential and evaluative information with parents/guardians.
  • Follow Y policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.
  • Assist in maintaining a developmentally appropriate site, including appearance, décor and cleanliness.
  • Prepare and serve snacks; clean snack area.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to talk or hear; frequently stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies up to 20 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Qualifications
  • 16 years of age or older (18 or older preferred).
  • 1–2 years of experience with children (camps, childcare, tutoring or nannying).
  • Ability to model and demonstrate Y values: caring, respect, responsibility and honesty.
  • Experience planning and implementing group activities.
  • Pre‑employment TB tests and MMR vaccination required.
  • Completion of minimum STARS required training, CPR/First Aid Training.
  • Clear portable background check in the statewide registry MERIT.
Preferred Education / Experience
  • Knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
  • Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
