Pay RangeBase pay range: $21.00/hr - $26.00/hr.
Job SummaryThe Farm Technician works in cooperation with the Farm Manager and the Research Trials Manager to improve the growing conditions of the research crops. The Farm Technician is primarily responsible for supporting daily farm operations and assisting with irrigation and pesticide applications. The Technician manages equipment and works closely with the crew to keep operations running efficiently on the Research Station.
Responsibilities- Assist farming crops and maintain greenhouses. Assist the Farm Manager with research farm maintenance.
- Record seasonal data relating to crop maps, fertilizer, irrigation, and overall growing season performance for each crop.
- Manage irrigation systems ensuring they are maintained and operated correctly.
- Spray and maintain on‑farm research and demonstration plots as needed.
- Apply pesticides, completing required documentation and posting requirements.
- Monitor and guide farming activities to achieve desired results.
- Coordinate with the Farm Manager and Breeder Assistants regarding chemical applications in the field and greenhouses.
- Operate and maintain farm equipment such as irrigation pumps, tractors, pickups, disks, sprayers, levelers, fertilizer spreaders, bed presses, mulch machines, pesticide applicators, etc.
- General knowledge of farm operations and management principles.
- Bi‑lingual English/Spanish ability is highly desirable but not required.
- Ability to handle stress and meet strict time constraints and deadlines.
- Computer experience with Microsoft Office software desired.
- B.S. in agriculture or related subject, or equivalent knowledge and experience as determined by Sakata.
- Farm management experience highly desirable.
- Current pesticide applicator’s license required.
- Work with chemicals and other irritating substances.
- Wear personal protective equipment when required.
- Work under various weather conditions such as extremes of temperature, dampness, rain, and sun exposure.
- Work in dusty conditions.
- Walk and stand for long periods of time.
- Work long and irregular hours.
