The Ultrasound Technologist operates the ultrasound equipment and assumes responsibility for the patient area. This position requires population‑specific competencies and adherence to National Patient Safety Goals. All applicants will receive consideration regardless of protected status. Responsibilities- Performs general ultrasound procedures.
- Performs 2D, pulsed‑wave Doppler, color flow Doppler evaluations on the upper and lower extremities for both arterial and venous systems, visceral vascular and carotid imaging.
- Reviews in‑patient requisitions, prioritizes patient list by severity, special procedures, requests, and equipment availability; revises schedule as needed.
- Develops film by automatic processing in a timely manner; manipulates laser printer and processor as necessary to obtain highest quality images.
- Performs daily quality control checks on the processor and generates a monthly report of the results summary.
- Manages procurement, storage, and routing of supplies for room preparation.
- Ensures reusable instruments are delivered to the appropriate department for sterilization.
- Performs echocardiography on adults and pediatric patients.
- Performs peripheral vascular procedures.
- Ensures all instruments are decontaminated and stored using appropriate processes, solutions, supplies and equipment.
- Complies with sterilization procedures as per manufacturer instructions and hospital policies.
- Prepares and documents sterilization process charts, logs, and records per hospital and regulatory guidelines.
- Completes high‑level disinfectant process education annually, as applicable.
- Performs breast ultrasound procedures.
- Reviews patient‑relevant previous imaging exams prior to the breast sonography exam.
- Interviews the patient to acquire clinical history.
- Correlates physical findings with adjunct imaging modalities.
- Optimizes the breast sonography exam using Doppler, color Doppler, and panoramic imaging.
- Provides imaging assistance to the radiologist for interventional breast ultrasound procedures.
- With an ARRT registry in Mammography and Radiology can operate radiographic equipment and monitors it for functionality, promptly reports malfunctions.
The Ultrasound Technologist reports to the Lead Ultrasound Technologist and/or Manager/Director. The position may involve varied physical demands and respiratory fit test requirements. Exposure includes moving equipment, chemical fumes from processors, patients with contagious diseases, electrical equipment, ionizing radiation, and potential exposure to blood/body fluids. Occasional exposure to odor, blood, chemical irritation, frequent emergency callbacks causing erratic working hours, overtime, and working in a darkened room up to 60% of the time.
CertificationRequirements
- Current certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) – must obtain current ARRT Sonography certification within the first 90 days of hire.
- Ability to obtain current RDMS, RDCS or RVT certification within 12 months of hire through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
- Diagnostic Cardiology:
Accept CCI registry. - Breast Imaging Centers:
Current ARRT certification (Breast Sonography) for mammography techs only performing breast sonography; successful completion of an allied‑health post‑secondary education program that is patient‑care related or equivalent experience; bachelor’s degree preferred; current CPR certification required within 90 days of hire; must communicate effectively in English (written/verbal). - Knowledge of preparing and sterilizing surgical instruments and supplies preferred for Lakeside Women’s Hospital.
