Senior Geotechnical Engineer – WSP (U.S.)
OverviewWSP is seeking a Senior Geotechnical/Geological Engineer to join our New England practice. The role will involve providing geotechnical engineering guidance and leadership for investigation, design, improvement, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sectors. This full‑time position requires an office‑based presence either fully in‑person or on a hybrid schedule. Office locations include Merrimack, NH;

- Lead investigations, design, and construction of foundations, soil & rock slopes, and retaining walls for transportation, pipelines, dams, mining, buildings, and private development projects.
- Provide hands‑on field activities, deliver high‑quality design and project management results, and adhere to industry standards for safety, accuracy, and functionality.
- Mentor entry‑ and mid‑level engineers and collaborate with cross‑functional teams of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals.
- Execute multiple concurrent geotechnical engineering projects as part of a dynamic team.
- Guide and train junior engineers; analyze, evaluate, and interpret field investigation data to inform project development, design, and construction.
- Maintain and enforce quality control standards, perform statistical analysis of rock and soil data, and produce accurate reports, sketches, calculations, and illustrations.
- Develop construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs). Prepare technical reports and presentations for clients, regulatory agencies, and internal stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, data integrity, documentation, training, monitoring systems, and record‑keeping.
- Interact professionally with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, clients, drillers, and laboratory staff.
- Remain current with the latest geotechnical engineering techniques and practices; collaborate with other engineers on federally, state, and locally funded projects.
- Exercise responsible decision‑making regarding company resources, adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct, and perform additional responsibilities as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- 5‑7 years of post‑education experience in engineering with prior geotechnical design experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or ability to obtain it promptly.
- Proficient knowledge of deep and shallow foundation design, slope stability, seismic engineering, retaining walls, earth retention systems, rock mechanics, settlement of compressible soils, ground improvement, excavation support, dewatering, and regulatory permitting.
- Understanding of rock and soil mechanics for subsurface investigations and design of foundations, earth structures, and pavement sub‑grades.
- Working knowledge of remediation, permitting, and construction laws, codes, and compliance practices.
- Strong technical computation skills, interpreting plans and specifications, and applying engineering principles.
- Project management experience with scoping, tracking hours and expenses for small‑ to mid‑level projects.
- Effective planning and conducting inspections and investigations across construction and design phases.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with varied audiences.
- Self‑leadership, attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
- Leadership in providing guidance and QA/QC to junior team members.
- Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, and discipline‑specific design software (Micro Station, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, Rocscience Geo Studio, etc.).
- Critical thinking and problem‑solving abilities for deriving solutions from testing results and data analysis.
- Assertive direction of field personnel to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, and harassment policies.
