Job Description

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Highway Resident Engineer to oversee new, replacement, or rehabilitated infrastructure with construction values ranging from $1‑$50 million. This position can be based out of Boston, Worcester, or Chelmsford, MA and Providence, RI.
The resident engineer will manage and oversee various work elements including excavation, back filling, compaction, cast‑in‑place concrete from formwork to reinforcement, MSE walls or similar, guardrail, drainage, overhead sign structures and other incidental items. The resident engineer will report to the Construction Manager, or Project Manager and may routinely or periodically act as their representative, depending on experience.
Your Impact- Manage a staff of inspectors and on‑call material technicians or surveyors.
- Daily interface with contractors, subcontractors and project owners.
- Chair progress meetings and prepare minutes.
- Review, interpret construction contract documents and oversee work for conformance to plans and specifications.
- Review technical submittals and shop drawings for general intent and compliance.
- Anticipate and help resolve design and construction issues.
- Review the contractor’s project schedule for general information related to schedule and logic.
- Complete daily reports, measure, calculate and track unit price quantities.
- Lead the contractor’s pay requisition development, review and approval process.
- Evaluate potential change orders and make recommendations; lead change‑order negotiations and prepare negotiation position with the owner.
- Monitor traffic maintenance for compliance.
- Take and compile photographs for tracking daily progress.
- Update red‑line drawings using Bluebeam.
- Prepare and update punch lists.
- Coordinate final inspections and prepare the final pay estimate.
- Support the final closeout process.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Maintain a proven track record of upholding workplace safety and complying with WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma.
- 11 years applicable experience, including 4 years of supervising staff.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; average proficiency with MS Word Suite.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Associate of Science Degree in Engineering or Construction Management, or a Bachelor of Science degree in the same field.
- ACI or NETTCP certifications, or ability to attain within 3 months of hiring.
- Hands‑on experience with construction management software such as Site or Field Manager, APPIA, Procore, IPD or similar systems; knowledge of Bluebeam.
- Demonstrated supervisory skills.
- Any combination of college education, professional licenses, certifications and experience will be considered.

Expected Salary: $78,200 - $136,730
